Maybe I am understanding it poorly, but it looks to me that the research profile is basically doing a minor research project, without doing any work on the lab. I feel however that you then just become a second hand student at that lab, and your ‘plans’ for the lab get done when the PhD or postdoc has time for it. Would this be the case or am I not getting the right idea?

The research part will have a clear definition that will be communicated to you soon. The exact contents of your individual project will have to be agreed upon by the program coordinator, your examiner and yourself – and approved by the Board of Examiners. Being a second hand student and having to wait until someone has time to run your experiments is definitely not the idea of the research profile.
Furthermore, (limited) practical work within the research profile will be possible if capacity and restrictions allow it.
